Fare Evaders Anonymous
I worked on this mini zine between the first and second issue of Good Golly Miss Trolley with the main intention of printing off extra copies to distribute on OC Transpo. I would love nothing more than to find a free zine on a bus seat, so I'm hoping to start a trend and I hope other people are just as thrilled about it as I am.
It's so annoying to hear city councillors talking about fare evasion like it's "stealing from the city" because public transit is a service. It's not a product, like a book or a watch. Taking home Our taxes cover other city services like snow removal and garbage collection, so why doesn't public transit get that same treatment?
A friend of mine told me recently that they have a personal rule that they'll only pay for transit if it comes on time, if the bus is over 10 minutes late, they'll sneak on without tapping their Presto card. It's ridiculous that OC Transpo fares are $4.00, especially when the service fails. When the bus doesn't come for 45 minutes, why should we have to pay full price?
All this anger, and the city's increased pressure on ticketing fare evaders, culminated in this zine! I'll update it soon with more recent information, since the numbers are from 2024, but here it is in the meantime:
