What is Mid City?
Mid City is a monthly zine covering Ottawa’s city hall and local municipal affairs. The zine is printed monthly and distributed through local businesses in Ottawa and to regular subscribers through Ko-Fi. Mid City is focused on engaging all Ottawa residents, including folks who are less familiar with city hall and its inner workings.
I’ve always wanted to produce journalism that was informative, accessible, and empowering. The printed zine format allows me to blend creativity and fun, alongside serious news. This zine is for you if:
- you want to learn more about city issues
- you want to get more involved in community but don’t know where to start
- you don’t like Ottawa but want to make it better
- you picked it at a shop because it looked cute
- you just love zines ✨💖
Mid City launched with the support of Carleton University’s Emerging Reporters Fund.
Welcoming. Empowering. Centered in Community.
Our mission
To empower Ottawans to learn, engage, and connect with the community and the municipality.
Our values
- Welcoming: Mid City is written and designed so anyone in Ottawa can pick it up and learn about what is happening in their city.
- Empowering: Mid City empowers its readers to engage with municipal politics through explaining key pieces of city news.
- Centered in Community: Mid City is a public service more than it is a business venture. This means that Mid City will be guided by your feedback and focused on subjects that are important to its readers.
As editor and reporter for Mid City, I’m not an unbiased observer. I want to be transparent about my values and perspectives, but I also want everyone to feel welcome. My goal is not to convince you that my opinions are the only way but I want to empower you to feel confident in your own. My hope is that readers of Mid City will feel better prepared to engage in municipal politics. Through this publication, readers will learn alongside me and will shape their own opinions about how Ottawa should run and what matters to them.
